In the quest for sustainable materials, Orange Fibre stands out as a revolutionary innovation. This unique textile, which is made from citrus juice by-products, turns what would otherwise be thrown away is created into luxurious, silk-like fabric. Here’s a closer look at how Orange Fibre is made and its impact on the fashion industry.
The Birth of Orange Fibre
Orange Fibre was co-founded by Adriana Santanocito and Enrica Arena in 2014. The idea was born out of a desire to find a sustainable use for the vast amounts of citrus waste produced annually. In Italy alone, the citrus juice industry has generated around 700,00 tons of waste every year.
The Production Process
Collecting Citrus Waste: This process begins starts with the collection of pastazzo, which is the by-product left after juice extraction.
Extraction of Cellulose: The pastazzo is then treated through a patented chemical process to extract cellulose.
Spinning into Yarn: The extracted cellulose is spun into yarn using specialised machinery.
Fabric Production: The yarn is woven into fabric, which can be dyed, printed, and finished to create a variety of textiles.
Environmental Impact
Orange Fibre addresses a variety of environmental issues:
- Waste Reduction: The repurposing of citrus waste, reduces the amount of organic waste that would otherwise end up in landfills.
- Sustainable Production: The production process is designed to be sustainable and minimises the use of chemicals which are harmful and conserving our natural resources.
Collaborations and Innovations
Orange Fibre has caught the attention of major fashion brands. In 2017, they collaborated with Salvatore Ferragamo to create a collection of dresses made from this innovative fabric.
The Future of Orange Fibre
As the fashion industry continues to seek sustainable alternatives, Orange Fibre represents a promising solution. Its ability to transform waste into high-quality, sustainable fabric makes it a valuable addition to the world of sustainable fashion.
