My Journey into Natural Dyeing: From Experiment to Exploration

I have always been intrigued by the world of natural dyeing, but up until now, I’ve only explored it as a casual interest rather than a focused creative process. My initial experiments have been more about curiosity than precision. I didn’t delve into the technical aspects like fabric preparation, which, as I’ve recently learned, plays a crucial role in the final outcome.

I skipped a key step in my early attempts—scouring the fabric. Scouring is the process of thoroughly cleaning the fabric to remove oils, dirt, and residues that can interfere with dye absorption. Without this preparation, my results were lacklustre, as you can see from the images above. The colours, if they appeared at all, turned out very pale and faded.

The only real success I encountered was with turmeric, which yielded a vibrant, golden yellow. It took to the fabric beautifully, but beyond that, most other natural dyes failed to produce the rich tones I had hoped for. This got me thinking about the science behind natural dyeing and how crucial it is to understand both the materials and methods.

Although these results weren’t exactly what I expected, they have sparked a deeper interest in the process. Now, I’m excited to explore natural dyeing further, this time with more care and knowledge, starting with the basics like fabric preparation and understanding how different natural ingredients interact with various textiles. Stay tuned as I dive deeper into this fascinating craft!
